Harkins Moves Up to #148 in Builder National Ranking

Harkins Builders is the 148th biggest builder in the nation, according to the annual Builder magazine ranking in their May 2009 issue. Up from #161 last year, the ranking is based in part on annual revenue, which in 2008 was $249 million.

The Harkins team has delivered another spectacular project! And if I do say so myself, Victoria Park at Sassafras Meadows is our best project yet!! Brad Cook, Senior Project Manager and his team worked exceedingly well with all the members of our development, management and construction teams and we are very pleased with the unique and beautiful building!

In addition to being delivered approximately 8 weeks in advance, it also came in under budget with very few change orders (less than 20) including several deductions and additions. Victoria Park has attracted a large number of interested seniors, and had over half of the 80 units were leased before we received our certificate of occupancy.

Many thanks to your team: Brad Cook, Senior Project Manager, Paul Lynch, Site Manager; Phil Lovell, Superintendent; Don Byrd, Superintendent; Michelle DeMarco, Administrative Field Support and the many others who I may have forgotten who were always courteous and professional and took great pride in their important roles. In addition, I would like to thank John Kim and Wade Hughes, our estimators who started this project off on the right foot.

I am so glad to have worked with Harkins “Eastern Shore Team” and call each of them a good friend!

Park View at Shelton Opens

Shelter Development hosted a grand opening celebration for their latest affordable housing location for seniors, Park View at Emerson. Harkins Builders president and CEO Dick Lombardo and project manager Bill Maffeo were acknowledged for delivering another high quality building for our long-time client, within budget and three months ahead of schedule. Park View at Emerson is an 80-unit independent living facility located in Howard County, Maryland.

Harkins Wins $69M Contract at Marine Base Quantico

Harkins Builders is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $69 million design-build contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington for the next phase of construction of student quarters and instruction facilities at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Harkins will build two 129-unit masonry and plank BEQs (P546 and P547), a 60,000 sf instruction facility (P555), and an 18,500 sf block bearing and steel roof addition (P619). Construction is expected to start in August.

The new training building will include four 300-seat lecture halls, six classrooms, and a large training room. The addition will comprise a two-story administration area. The new dormitories will be similar to the Phase I building Harkins is currently constructing, which has blast-resistant windows, brick veneer, and a metal roof. A green construction project, it is being built to LEED Silver specifications.

The new buildings will serve The Basic School (TBS) at Quantico, where all newly commissioned United States Marine Corps officers are sent for a 26-week training course to prepare them for duty as company grade officers in the operating forces.

Harkins is currently the design-build contractor on three armed forces reserve centers and has built almost 4,000 units of military housing throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
